#DisneyFamilia: Celebra el Hispanic Heritage Month at Home with These Amazing Recipes!

Our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration continues with a glimpse of how three Hispanic Disney chefs bring their cultura and sabor to their work at Walt Disney World Resort.

In this video, you will learn the stories of Chef John Prieto, Chef Daniel Contreras and Chef Yoly Lazo Colón. You can also see the Spanish version here.

We are also sharing three mouth-watering recipes that you can follow at home to continue the celebration, inspired by different dishes that have been showcased during past event of the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival and the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts.

Shrimp ceviche from EPCOT

To start our culinary fiesta at home, we have a simple, fresh and colorful shrimp ceviche with lime mint foam. It was first introduced at the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts.

This dish can be found across several countries in Latin America, but it originated in Perú and can be made with fish and different types of seafood. There are many variations to ceviche; Chef John Prieto, originally from Perú, who works at California Grill in Disney’s Contemporary Resort, shares how he also makes this spectacular and easy-to-prepare dish at home with his family.

Charred skirt steak with arepa (corn cake) and jicama slaw from EPCOT

For the main course, we suggest a charred skirt steak with arepa (corn cake) and jicama slaw, which you may have discovered at the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival. The arepa is a staple in Colombia and Venezuela; they can be sweet or savory, and on this occasion, we are featuring a savory/salty arepa.

This recipe was created by Colombian Chef Daniel Contreras, who has created dishes for many EPCOT festivals. His love for his hometown food, his heritage and culture inspires every recipe he showcases.

Flan from EPCOT

To finish our dinner party, we have one of my favorite traditional desserts: flan! This delicious flan with caramelized pineapple recipe was first served at the Dominican Republic Marketplace at the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival in 2015.

Puerto Rican Chef Yoly Lazo Colón, Pastry Chef at Amorette’s Patisserie in Disney Springs, developed the recipe. She shares her favorite memories of making flan every Friday at home, in our video.

Click the links below for downloadable versions of all of these recipes. Happy cooking!

‘Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom’ Tells Stories of Heartwarming ‘Firsts’

Remember the first time you saw the love of your life… or stepped foot into a new home… and the rush of excitement that came with it? Those kinds of significant first moments also exist in the animal world and are the focus of the latest episode of National Geographic’s “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom,” now streaming on Disney+.

Let me tell you about a couple of my favorite “firsts” in this episode titled “Betty and the Beast”:

Anyone who has ever been on a “blind date” can relate to the first meeting for babirusas Betty and Mentari at The Oasis at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. A special matchmaking plan, known as a species survival plan (SSP), introduces the pair to each other on a breeding recommendation. The animal care team put a lot of thought and effort into ensuring both Betty and Mentari made a positive first impression that could develop into something more – a chance at creating a little babirusa piglet.

You may recall seeing news about the first baby babirusa born at the park a few months ago, and now you know, it all started with Betty and Mentari’s first date. This threatened species has grown by one more, thanks to the birth of Kirana.

Zebras at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Another great “first” in this episode follows our herd of Hartmann’s mountain zebras as they are introduced to their new home on the savanna at Kilimanjaro Safaris. Move-in day was a big moment for the animal care team, who successfully transferred the herd onto the savanna for the first time in the park’s history. This big family moment was made extra special with the arrival of a male foal born into the herd just a few weeks prior. Here’s a look at the newest member of the zebra family:

I hope you are getting a chance to enjoy the “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom” and its first-ever looks at some of the incredible behind-the-scenes work that goes into taking care of 5,000+ animals.  You can become part of the conservation conversation by following us on social media. We’re sharing even more behind-the-scenes content from our animal keepers on @drmarkatdisney on Instagram and @DisneyASE on Facebook. And be sure to check out this week’s family-friendly activity page, now available as a complimentary digital download.

Disney’s Halloween Festival at Disneyland Paris Returns with New Character ‘Selfie Spots’

Disney’s Halloween Festival has returned to Disneyland Paris with exclusive “selfie spots”  – a new way of interacting with your favorite Disney friends!  From now until November 1, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald, Goofy, Pluto and others are dressed in their most wickedly colorful Halloween fashions to share some special not-so-spooky moments with visiting guests.

In the heart of Fantasyland, the Meet Mickey Mouse theatre is decorated in the colors of the season, welcoming guests of all ages to take an unforgettable selfie with Mickey and friends.

Selfies at the Studio Theater in Disneyland Paris

During this year’s Festival, popular Disney villains, including Maleficent, Ursula and Captain Hook are also taking over some iconic park locations.  Even villains like Jafar and Cruella de Vil are invading Studio Theatre at Walt Disney Studios Park to strike frightfully fun poses with guests.

Pumpkins at Frontierland in Disneyland Paris

The bravest guests can discover – or rediscover  – Disneyland Paris’ spookiest attractions as well. They can shriek in The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Walt Disney Studios Park, seated in the elevator of the infamous Hollywood Tower Hotel, facing 13-story freefalls and enjoy other surprises.

At Disneyland Park, guests are invited to join spirits and ghouls who enjoy nothing more than feasting and dancing in the dining room of Phantom Manor, nestled in a dark corner of Frontierland.

For the entire season, Disneyland Park is decorated in its most spooktacular Halloween decor from Main Street, U.S.A., to Sleeping Beauty Castle and beyond.  And in Frontierland, there’s a colourful Mexican-inspired festival complete with lively music and prancing skeletons.

This year’s celebration also includes enchanting sweet and savory flavors shaped like Disney villains and Halloween-themed merchandise at shops throughout the Resort.

Selfies with Mickey and Minnie at Disneyland Paris

As you can see, Halloween is being celebrated at Disneyland Paris with a witch’s hatful of surprises to discover. Even Disney Village has been taken over by pumpkins and ghosts!

Disney’s Halloween Festival at Disneyland Paris began September 26 and runs through November 1, 2020.

Also, did you know?

• 13,262 flowers make up the new garlands from Halloween to Frontierland.

• 175 meters of giant light strings illuminate the road to Frontierland.

• 3-meter-tall female “Catrinas” skeletons inspired by Mexican culture are highlighted in the decorations.
