#DisneyMagicMoments: Whistle While You Ride on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Walt Disney World Resort

Heigh-HOOOOOOO!

One of my all-time favorite moments of any Disney attraction happens aboard Seven Dwarfs Mine Train inside Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida … but more on that in a moment.

This rustic mine train in New Fantasyland takes you inside the world of the classic Disney film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” With your creaky cart teetering back and forth, you feel the wind on your face as you navigate dips and turns before eventually arriving at the lovable dwarfs’ mine.

As you chug through the cavern, you get to see them at work (most of them, anyway … looking at you, Sleepy!), collecting colorful gems. And then as you reach the bottom of an incline leading out of the mine, all the dwarfs’ voices coalesce to sing their famous “Heigh-ho!” chorus. It is such a beautiful moment that literally surrounds you, their voices echoing off the walls and seemingly buoying your train up the climb out of the mine. It gives me chills every time.

In this new “Ride & Learn” video, whistle while you work on discovering all sorts of fascinating facts about Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, one of the most popular attractions in all of Walt Disney World Resort. I’m looking forward to experiencing it again in person real soon when Magic Kingdom Park begins its phased reopening July 11.

#DisneyMagicMoments: Behind the Camera – Spaceship Earth Lights Up the Night at EPCOT for the First Time

Prior to the grand opening of EPCOT back in 1982, I was patiently waiting to see Spaceship Earth at night. We all knew even then what an iconic symbol that massive geosphere would be for Walt Disney World Resort, but I wanted to see it for myself.

It did not disappoint. I took this photo the very first time Spaceship Earth lit up at night, and the way the light bounced off the geodesic panels was amazing (then and now). And then to top it off, we had a fantastic full moon that night, as well – a bit of Disney magic! So to capture both those icons in all their glory in one image, I decided to try using a multiple exposure technique.

#DisneyMagicMoments: Behind the Camera – Spaceship Earth Lights Up the Night at EPCOT for the First Time Spaceship Earth lights up the night at EPCOT for the first time in 1982

Back then, we didn’t have digital imaging software (or digital cameras, for that matter). If I wanted a multiple exposure, I had to create it in the camera itself on a single frame of film – the definition of “old school.” Working on a tripod, I attached a super-telephoto 400mm lens to the camera to capture the moon. Then, I pressed a button on the camera that would not advance the film when I clicked the shutter. I then switched back to a wide-angle lens to capture Spaceship Earth on that same frame.

Because it was all on film, I had no idea if it worked until I returned to my darkroom the next day and developed the shot. Wow, how times have changed! Lucky for me, this experiment turned out pretty well, and proved to me just how fantastic Disney icons look under celestial bodies – a motif I’ve played with over the course of my nearly four decades as a Disney photographer.

#DisneyMagicMoments: Celebrate the Anniversary of Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios with a Special Slinky Dog Dash Video

It was two years ago today when Woody, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of our “Toy Story” pals welcomed us into Andy’s backyard for the grand opening of Toy Story Land in Disney’s Hollywood Studios here at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

To commemorate this toy-riffic occasion, we’re offering a very special ride on one of the land’s signature attractions, Slinky Dog Dash – a never-before-seen, 10-hour ride! Yes, you read that correctly … TEN HOURS! Just push play on the video below and let it draw you in to an oddly satisfying, soothing experience as good ol’ Slink continues to dash across your screen over and over again.

This video is also a great way to get ready for the reopening of Disney’s Hollywood Studios on July 15, when Toy Story Land will once again invite you to become an “honorary toy” and play with Andy’s best buddies in a sprawling adventure. After you finish zooming around the land on Slinky Dog Dash, you can take a twirl on Alien Swirling Saucers, play classic carnival games in 4D inside Toy Story Mania!, or grab a bite at Woody’s Lunch Box.

Until then, enjoy this special ride on Slinky Dog Dash and keep checking back with us here at the Disney Parks Blog for even more #DisneyMagicMoments.
