Can I Get A Refund On My Disney World Park Hopper Ticket Add-On? Here Are Three Options!

As Disney World starts to put its re-opening plans into action, the parks will be making a lot of modifications to fit with the health and safety guidelines they have put in place.

Cinderella Castle

Since there will be limited capacity in the theme parks when they reopen, guests will need to make reservations through the Disney Park Pass system in order to visit the theme parks. Due to the lower capacity as well as limited options available to guests once the parks reopen, Disney made the decision to pause all park hopping — which means “hopping” between Disney World theme parks in the same day — temporarily. (Note that Disney is selling park hopper add-ons for 2021 tickets at this time, so if your trip is in 2021, you’ll likely be able to park hop. This information is primarily for guests headed to Disney World in 2020.)

So what about all those guests who had purchased the Park Hopper add-on with their 2020 tickets?? Can they get refunds for that extra cost?

OK let’s break down the options. When Disney World reopens, guests are only allowed to make a park pass  reservation for one park per day. While they can leave a park and return back into that same park later that day if capacity allows, guests can no longer spend a morning in Magic Kingdom before hopping over to enjoy an afternoon in Disney’s Hollywood Studios (for example).

Disney’s Hollywood Studios entrance

Disney has been offering refunds for guests who have been affected by the closures as well as a few options for Annual Passholders whose passes have been impacted.

And Disney will also be giving guests options for how to handle Park Hopper and Park Hopper Plus add-ons that had been previously added to their tickets.

Option 1: Ticket Use Dates Have Been Extended, So “Wait and See” If Park Hopping is Reinstated

Disney has stated that guests with Park Hopper tickets can use their “current date-based ticket by September 26th, 2021, with the existing add-on options, should the options return by that date.” So if Park Hopping is allowed any time in the next year+, you can use your tickets as normal.

Based on our reader responses when we asked about park hopping add-on refunds, this is what many guests are choosing to do: wait it out. Currently, there’s no penalty for not changing your tickets. So guests who have vacations booked later in 2020 can simply wait to see if park hopping is reinstated by the time their vacation rolls around. OR they can postpone their vacations into 2021, as many tickets have been extended for use into September 2021.

If park hopping is not reinstated by the time your vacation approaches, then it’s time to move on to Option 2… .

Option 2: Modify Your Tickets

Resort packages that include tickets are able to be modified by contacting the Disney Reservation Center at (407) 566-4985 or your travel agent directly. “Modifications” is likely where you will be able to switch your tickets to a different type and receive a refund on the park hopper add-on. We’ve had several readers confirm that they were able to modify their tickets with Disney and receive refunds.

That said, when I reached out to Disney World directly via website chat, I didn’t get as satisfactory an answer as I was hoping for. Initially, my chat companion, Wendy, told me that ticket cancellation would be as close as I could get to a refund:

And that sounds to me like I’d be able to change tickets to non-park-hopper tickets and get a refund. But when I got down to brass tacks, Wendy tapped out.

So, yes, we have had some readers confirm that they were able to refund their park-hopper add-on by modifying their tickets. But you’ll need to speak with Disney directly to see if that’s an option for you.

Moving on to Option 3… .

Option 3: Cancel Your Tickets

However, if you choose NOT to visit Disney World, you can also cancel your ticket or package. The Disney Reservation Center and travel agents will have more details so that you can explore your options.

But please be VERY careful with canceling tickets right now. Remember — Disney is NOT selling tickets for 2020 right now, and has not stated when those sales would return beyond “later this summer.” So if you have tickets for 2020 at the moment, those are precious commodities and you might not want to be too hasty with canceling those if you have them. If you cancel, you may not be able to purchase more for this year.

Epcot

So there we have it — three options for trying to manage your park hopper ticket add-on here in 2020! Remember, if you’re not going for a while, your best bet is probably to sit tight and wait to see if park hopping comes back by the time your trip rolls around. You can always “modify” or cancel your tickets later if needed!

Other Things To Note About Disney World Park Tickets

So while you’re deciding what to do with your tickets, here are two more details that Disney has released that may impact your decision:

Ticket Use Dates Have Been Extended For Most Guests and Flexibility Has Been Added

First — guests who have just about any kind of multi-day theme park ticket may now be able to use those tickets through September 26, 2021.

Second — we have also confirmed with Disney directly that if you have tickets for specific dates and they’ve been extended, those tickets can be broken up and used separately. For example, if you have a 5-day ticket dated November 1-5, 2020, you can use those five days — individually or altogether — anytime between park reopening and September 26, 2021.

Speak with a Disney reservations specialist to get more details on how to do this. And note that things are changing very quickly right now, so this could be updated at any time.

It’s important to note that guests will need a valid park ticket in order to use the Disney Park Pass system to make reservations for the theme parks. If you plan on visiting Disney World any time soon, be sure to talk to Disney or your travel agent to decide which option is the best for your situation!

Disney Dreamers Academy Alumni Make a Difference During Pandemic

Each year 100 high school students from across the country are selected to come to Walt Disney World Resort and participate in Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and ESSENCE. Every student comes with an inspiring story, and throughout the four-day mentoring program they are encouraged to make a difference in the lives of others. So, during these challenging times, it is no surprise, that Disney Dreamers are out doing their part to help. Two of those making a difference include Ashlyn Pinkins of Gretna, Louisiana and Kaylin Garnett of Augusta, Georgia. Here are their inspiring stories.

Tracking the Virus

Ashlyn attended the 2011 Disney Dreamers Academy with a love for science.  Now she has fulfilled one of her dreams and is a public health epidemiologist for her home state of Louisiana.  Ashlyn has the critical role of documenting and tracking cases of the virus using information gathered from hospitals and other medical organizations.

“It’s just been so informative and inspirational to see how much people push forward and how much work they actually do,” said Ashlyn. “To get a firsthand account of the work people are doing in the background is just amazing.”

Ashlyn reflected on her time at Disney Dreamers Academy, saying, the experience showed her that no dream is out of reach as long as you keep working hard.

Caring for the Sick

2016 Disney Dreamers Academy alumna Kaylin always had a passion for helping others. She has continued to chase her dreams earning her Bachelor of Science in nursing, while also working as a certified nursing assistant and unit manager at a local nursing home.

Kaylin was assigned to care for and manage administrative duties specifically for COVID-19-positive patients. There she saw firsthand the impact healthcare professionals made.

“This experience has confirmed that being on the frontlines to help others is what I want to do in life,” Kaylin said. Her efforts over the last few months have helped contain the spread of cases at her facility.

Although her work has been as challenging as ever, Kaylin’s desire to help others inspired her to pursue her goal of becoming an emergency medical technician (EMT), having recently passed the exam while still working.

Kaylin credits Disney Dreamers Academy for teaching her the value of teamwork and inspiring her to never give up on her dreams.

Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and ESSENCE is a four-day, transformational mentoring program for teens that has taken place at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida annually since 2008.  Each class of 100 teens is encouraged to “Be100,” to be positive and “all in,” and to pursue their dreams and make a difference in the lives of others.

Cast Members Celebrated National Yoga Day! national yoga day

Cast members celebrated National Yoga Day with a special guest: Mickey Mouse!

Last Sunday was “National Yoga Day” and in honor of this, Shanghai Disneyland hosted a yoga event for it’s cast members in order to promote self-care and wellness.

The event took place in front of the Enchanted Storybook Castle, where over 200 cast members enjoyed a relaxing morning, following local health and safety measures of course, in company of Mickey and the Shanghai Disney Ambassadors, Eleven and Fiona.

“It’s a day to slow down, take a deep breath and focus your mind” said Cici Li, Vice President of Human Resources at Shanghai Disney Resort. “Im so happy to be able to celebrate International Yoga Day here in front of the Enchanted Storybook Castle. I hope that today’s cast can learn a couple of poses that they can practice at home to stay fit and healthy.”

Cast Members at the other parks around the world were also able to celebrate National Yoga Day virtually!

At Disneyland Paris, yoga instructor Tara Stiles was in charge for hosting a class. Over at Walt Disney World and Disneyland, yoga classes were available all weekend online and at Hong Kong Disneyland, the class was lead by a cast member named Mandy.

It’s important to remember to take a little time off and relax and work on our mindfulness, specially during these times. Namaste!

Everything You Need to Know About Spaceship Earth

You’re going on vacation to Walt Disney World! The only problem? You’re not sure which attractions are right for you and your kiddos and you have questions. Which attractions are too intense for little ones? What rides do I really need a FastPass+ reservation for? What’s the disability access like for certain attractions? We’re answering all those questions and more in our Everything You Need to Know attraction series with today’s focus on Spaceship Earth at EPCOT!

What is Spaceship Earth?

Everything You Need to Know About Spaceship Earth

Spaceship Earth is EPCOT’s flagship attraction and housed inside of its signature 18-story geosphere. The attraction itself is a slow-moving dark ride showcasing major moments in the history of communication.

Where is Spaceship Earth?

Spaceship Earth is located at the main entrance of EPCOT and inside of the park’s icon.

What is the History of Spaceship Earth?

Everything You Need to Know About Spaceship Earth Spaceship Earth opened with the park on October 1, 1982. To date, there have been four versions of this attraction even though the experience and story has remained largely the same through the years. Changes have typically involved a change in narrator and sponsor, as well as adjustments to scenes, score, and some effects. One of the most substantial changes involved the removal of the ride’s descent scenes leading to the unloading area.

Everything You Need to Know About Spaceship Earth To celebrate the year 2000, a Mickey Mouse arm holding a magic wand with the number 2000 appeared next to Spaceship Earth. In 2001, the number of the year 2000 was replaced by the word Epcot. These additions were later removed in 2007.

What You Need to Know About the Queue for Spaceship Earth

Everything You Need to Know About Spaceship Earth
Using a FP+ reservation to ride Spaceship Earth, just tap your band and go.

Much of the queue for Spaceship Earth is outside of the attraction and consists of a series of switchbacks. around the base of the attraction.

What You Need to Know About the Ride Experience

Guests experiencing Spaceship Earth slowly move past animatronic scenes representing major moments in the history of communication as narrated by Academy Award winner Judi Dench.

Guests riding Spaceship Earth will ride through scenes showcasing cave paintings, the Phoenicians using their alphabet to trade goods, Gutenberg’s printing press, and then later the rise of computers. The attraction finale is a projection of Earth from the perspective of space before the ride vehicles gently turn backwards and slowly descend down to the unloading area.

During that descent, guests use an interactive screen to personalize an animated video about their possible future.

What You Need to Know About the Ride Vehicles

Everything You Need to Know About Spaceship Earth Spaceship Earth employs an omnimover system–a continuously moving ride system. Guests step aboard a car from a moving walkway. Each car contains four hard seats with two in the front and two in the back. There are no safety restraints.

Everything You Need to Know About Spaceship Earth Each row has a single interactive touch screen which comes into play towards the end of the attraction. There is one controller per row so you may want to seat kids in separate rows with an adult so each child can control their interactive experience.

What You Need to Know About Accessibility

Guests must transfer to a standard wheelchair and then to the ride vehicle. Guests boarding the attraction should be prepared for a small step up from a moving walkway into the moving vehicle.

Due to the nature of the experience, Guests with service animals should check with a Cast Member at the attraction for boarding information.

What You Need to Know About the Health and Safety Advisories

Disney doesn’t recommend this attraction for guests who are made uncomfortable by enclosed dark spaces; but honestly, there are only a few moments where guests might feel discomfort or confined. For those who are concerned, Spaceship Earth is nothing like what guests experience on Mission: SPACE.

Also, a small number of guests with motion sensitivity may experience discomfort when the vehicle slowly rotates and moves backward at the end of the ride. However, this rotation and backwards movement is very slow and gentle in motion.

What are the Height Requirements?

There is no height requirement for Spaceship Earth! Everyone in the family can enjoy this attraction together.

Does Spaceship Earth Offer FastPass+?

©Rikki Niblett

Yes, but it may not be necessary depending on what time of day you plan to ride it.

If you want to ride Soarin’ and Test Track before you head to World Showcase, try to get a FastPass+ reservation for around 1 p.m. Or, if you plan on spending the afternoon in Future World and don’t want to use FastPass+, try to ride after 3 p.m.

Does Weather Affect Spaceship Earth?

Everything You Need to Know About Spaceship Earth A June storm pops over World Drive as a rainy afternoon gets started.

Since this attraction is located indoors, inclement weather will not affect the ride’s operation; however, guests waiting in the extended queue may be exposed to the elements.

What’s the Best Time of Day to Experience Spaceship Earth?

Because Spaceship Earth sits at the main entrance of the park, guests tend to ride it first. Try to check it out before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.

Everything You Need to Know About Spaceship Earth Spaceship Earth Wait Times

This chart shows you roughly how long you’ll wait for Spaceship Earth when you visit on a day with a given EPCOT Crowd Level. The blue bars represent the average “peak” wait time (that is, how long the line will be at its busiest). The bottom and top black lines represent the range of peak wait times to expect (for you fellow nerds out there: it’s the 5th percentile and 95th percentile of peak wait times). Please note that these are estimates, and for a better forecast for your travel dates, see Spaceship Earth Wait Times.

What is the Future of Spaceship Earth?

Spaceship Earth was slated for closure and an extensive redo where guests would still travel through time, but the focus would be on storytelling and the human experience.

However, due to the lengthy COVID-19 shutdown, Spaceship Earth is currently scheduled to reopen in its current form on July 15 with its redo rescheduled for some time in the future.

Did I answer all of your questions about Spaceship Earth? Is this attraction at the top of your family’s vacation to-do list? Let us know in the comments.

NEWS! Disney English Learning Centers Will Be Closing in China!

Shanghai Disneyland and Hong Kong Disneyland have already been welcoming guests back into the parks in China.

However, since this unprecedented situation constantly changes, Disney has had to make a few tough decisions outside of the parks in China.

Shine News has reported that Disney English will no longer be available in China after operating for 12 years. Disney English opened its learning centers with English-immersion classes that included storytelling, singing, and interactive games as a way to educate people in the country.

The first Disney English location was debuted in Shanghai in October 2008, before making its way across the country with 26 learning centers (10 of which are based in Shanghai). Over 100,000 children ages 2 through 12 have been able to expand upon their language skills through Disney’s programs.

However, classes were closed in-person in January due to health concerns, and online classes were offered starting March 19th. The Walt Disney Company Executive Vice President Mahesh Samat has stated that “Over the past few years, we have noticed a shift in consumer preferences toward online learning experiences and this trend has been accelerated by the global pandemic as families are hesitant to resume in-person supplemental learning classes.”

He went on to comment that “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to not reopen the centers. We are ensuring that each family of a Disney English learner is refunded accordingly, and we are taking care of each and every one of our affected cast members.”
