What to Expect When Dining at Walt Disney World Following Coronavirus

A big part of the Walt Disney World vacation for many is dining. Disney has recently shared details of what Guests can expect to experience when looking to dine while visiting the resort following the closure due to the coronavirus. Enhancements made to the dining experiences are based on guidance from health authorities, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and appropriate government agencies.

During the reopening period, many dining experiences may be modified or unavailable in order to promote cleanliness and physical distancing. In addition, Guests ages 2 and up will need to wear face coverings in all public areas, including while entering and exiting dining establishments. These coverings can be removed while eating and drinking.

For those looking to dine in a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you will need to have a confirmed reservation, particularly if you are a day Guest.

When the parks reopen, in order to dine at table service locations, you’ll need valid park admission, a reservation for park entry and a dining reservation. Keep in mind these reservations do not guarantee admission to the park.

When Guests visit a restaurant moving forward, they will notice that Disney has increased cleaning in high-traffic areas such as public elevators and escalators, handrails, benches, tables, handles, restrooms and more. Additionally, seating areas, dining areas and pagers will be cleaned between Guests. Menus will be shared in ways to minimize contact. For those eating at quick-service restaurants, menus will be displayed on signage. At table-service restaurants, you will have the ability to scan a QR code with your mobile device to access the digital menu.
Items like beverages that were previously self-serve will instead be served by Cast Members.

Additional changes to Walt Disney World dining experiences include:

  • Character Dining will not be offered during the initial reopening, with the exception of a modified experience at Topolino’s Terrace – Flavors of the Riviera.
  • Dinner shows will not be offered during the initial reopening.
  •  Restaurants will be limited in capacity. Some locations will remain temporarily closed.
  • Private dining and in-room delivery will not be offered during the initial reopening window.
  • Mobile order service will be offered at select quick service locations throughout the Walt Disney World theme parks (when open), Disney Springs and select Disney Resort hotels.

At the end of your meal when it’s time to pay, you’ll strongly be suggested to use cashless payment options, including debit cards, credit cards and Disney Gift Cards. Guests can also opt for contactless payment options like mobile wallets. Disney Resort hotel Guests can also use MagicBands to charge their purchase to their room.

Disney did announce previously that Disney Dining Plans have officially been cancelled. If you had booked the Disney Dining Plan, you will be refunded your money and those who had Free Dining will have that part of their reservation cancelled. In addition, if you did have an Advance Dining Reservation made prior, they have also been cancelled.

NEWS: Disney World Now Waiving Cancellation and Change Fees Through October 3rd

In addition to all the other news being shared by Disney World today referencing hotel stays, we’ve got a newly pushed back date for cancellation and change fee waivers.

Beach Club Resort in Disney World

Previously, Disney World had stated that cancellation and change fees on hotel reservations would be waived through “the end of the closures.” Now that we have a reopening date for the theme parks, Disney has also pushed back the its date allowing guests to update and modify — and even cancel — their reservations even further.

The powers that be at Disney World know that things are going to be very…DIFFERENT…at the parks and resorts in the coming months. As a result, they’re allowing guests a few more months to make up their minds about whether or not to take the plunge and travel to the parks this year.

Guests can now change or cancel their vacations up to October 3rd, 2020, without incurring a fee from Disney World.

Updated language on Disney World’s website

Note that if you’ve booked your Disney World vacation through a third party, cancellation, change fees, and deadlines may be different. Check with them directly for updates to change and cancellation fees.

We’ll be bringing you LOTS more information and details on the hotels and parks reopening here at DFB! Stay tuned, and don’t forget to join our newsletter!

NEWS: You’re Not Even VISITING A Disney World Hotel If You Don’t Have THIS (And We’re NOT Talking About Masks)

We’ve been awaiting updates from Disney World regarding their now confirmed reopening that will begin on July 11th.

Beach Club Resort

Now, it appears Disney has shared a LOT more specifics concerning their reopening procedures. We shared the changes announced to transportation, but one of the BIGGEST updates seems to center on the requirements to even ENTER the resort hotels!

Thanks to Twitter user @ScottGustin, who alerted folks to Disney’s updates on their site, we now know that Disney will be requiring guests to have a confirmed Disney hotel reservation OR a confirmed dining reservation (if not staying overnight) to enter the resort hotels.

Updated Info from Disney

So it appears that unless you have a confirmed reason to be visiting a reopened resort hotel, for the time being, you won’t be permitted to enter. (Oh, and you’ll need a mask, too.)

Now, Disney has currently paused the option to make any dining or hotel reservations right now as they clear out their reservations system to re-work it for reduced capacity management. So how are you supposed to MAKE those dining and hotel reservations? Stay tuned. Disney has not yet released the full details of their new theme park reservations system or the updated hotel/dining reservation system. What we DO know is that dining reservations will now be allowed 60 days in advance instead of 180 days in advance.

We’re monitoring these new developments and will update you with more information as it’s released.

Don’t forget to subscribe to the DisneyFoodBlog Newsletter for ALL the updates!

Will you be visiting Disney World soon after it reopens? Let us know in the comments!

Disney World Resort has just updated information on Resort Reservations, Experiences, Transportation, Dining, and more

disney world

As part of Disney’s plans for a phased reopening of Walt Disney World Resort, select Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground will begin to reopen to Guests on June 22, 2020.

Guests may be receiving email communication from Disney if they have a Resort hotel booking between June 22, 2020, and July 4, 2020. Guests will need to confirm, modify, or cancel their reservations by June 12, 2020.

For guests wishing to confirm their reservations:

  • Contact the Disney Reservation Center to notify Disney of Guest’s confirmation.
  • As needed, guests will be moved from closed to open resorts during this time. This move will be at no additional cost to guests. Note that they won’t have an option to modify to another resort of their choosing for this reservation.
  • As previously communicated, for Guests who had a dining plan, Disney will be modifying their package to remove the dining plan.
  • If guests staying in Disney resorts before park opening on July 11, 2020, want to keep their reservation, they will be downgraded out of the ticket package and the package price will be reduced. Alternately, they can move their reservation to new dates, or cancel.

For Guests wishing to modify their reservations to a future date in 2020:

  • Contact the Disney Reservation Center to modify the booking to a later date in 2020.
  • If guests would like to modify to a date on or after July 11, 2020, they may only modify to one of the announced opened resorts, based on availability. Guests will be responsible for any higher rates.
  • Travel protection may be moved to a new reservation in 2020. The Guest will be responsible for any difference in price.

For Guests wishing to cancel their reservations:

  • Contact the Disney Reservation Center to notify Disney of the cancellation.

Below is a sample email being sent to guests:

What Happens If I Booked a Trip to Disney World This Summer, But I End Up Canceling?

Despite Disney World reopening its theme parks beginning on July 11, some guests may be weighing the pros and cons of keeping their upcoming Disney World reservation for a number of reasons.

With new realities such as an advance reservation system to enter the parks, no fireworks or parades, no character dining, and sanitation concerns, it’s completely understandable that travelers may be reconsidering their summer vacation plans.

Magic Kingdom

Disney offered a slew of automatic refunds during the park closures. Now that the parks will be open again, however, it may be more tricky to get everything refunded. While we cannot decide for each guest if they should cancel or not, we CAN offer some insight into what the repercussions might be.

If a guest selectively chooses to cancel their upcoming vacation, here’s what they can expect will happen.

How to Cancel

According to Disney’s website, most reservations can be canceled online. If you are in the unique circumstance where you need to call Disney in order to cancel, the phone number to call is (407) 934-7639.

To cancel online, sign in to your Disney account and go to your Reservations page. If you are able to cancel your reservation online, you will see a link that says “Cancel Reservation.”

general

Mickey Mouse

Disney’s site notes that a cancellation fee may apply. During the closures, however, this fee was waived. According to Disney, “To provide additional flexibility, we are waiving Disney-imposed change and cancellation fees up to the date of check-in for reservations with arrivals through the closing period.” This indicates that Disney MAY NOT be waiving these fees anymore once the closing period ends.

What Disney is Automatically Cancelling Due to Capacity Reductions

Whether you choose to cancel your reservation or not, Disney has announced a series of cancellations that they will be making automatically that may impact your upcoming vacation. These include:

Haunted Mansion

If you had previously booked any of these experiences and prepaid any sort of amount of down payment towards those bookings, Disney should be refunding that amount in full.

Disney’s Cancellation and Refund Policies

Per Disney’s website, the following policies apply to arrivals between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020:

  • “For cancellations made 30 days or more prior to guest arrival, amounts paid, minus cancellation fees assessed by third party hotels or other suppliers, non-refundable air transportation, non-refundable runDisney race registrations, non-refundable travel protection plan costs, and other amounts owed, will be refunded”
  • “For cancellations made 2 days to 29 days prior to guest arrival, amounts paid, minus a cancellation fee of $200.00 per package and minus any cancellation fees assessed by third party hotels or other suppliers, non-refundable air transportation, non-refundable runDisney race registrations, non-refundable travel protection plan costs, and other amounts owed, will be refunded. No refunds are given for cancellations of any personalized products or experiences.”
  • For cancellations made 1 day or less prior to guest arrival or for no-shows, the full price of the package is non-refundable.

Welcome to Disney World!

What is unclear at this time is if this cancellation policy will remain in effect once the theme parks reopen. These are unprecedented times and Disney World has never been faced with so many unique circumstances regarding guests’ reservations. However, at this time we have not seen anything from Disney to indicate a change in their policy except for refunds during the closure. For now, we will have to wait and see!

Hotel Rooms & Packages

During the closures, Disney was automatically canceling and refunding all hotel reservations. Now that the parks are set to reopen in July, these automatic cancellations may no longer be happening, and guests could need to selectively cancel their reservations.

Grand Villa Bedroom at Disney’s Riviera Resort

For guests with impacted reservations during the closures who were offered Free Dining, those packages are also being canceled. However, Disney is offering a hefty 35% room discount for those impacted.

Park Tickets

During the closures, Disney was pretty flexible in extending the useful life of park tickets. Per Disney, “Unexpired multi-day theme park tickets with unused days, or date-specific theme park tickets with a start date on or before March 31, 2020 will automatically be extended to use any date through December 15, 2020. If you are unable to visit by December 15, 2020 you may apply the value of a wholly unused ticket toward the purchase of a ticket for a future date.”

Note that Disney has now begun to extend some multi-day tickets through September 26, 2021.

Animal Kingdom Gate

We spoke with a Cast Member regarding the possibility of Park Hopper add-ons being refunded, as many guests were wondering if park hopping would be halted at the time of reopening. As of time of writing, we were told that park-hopper add-ons will NOT be automatically refunded, primarily due to the fact that they currently do not know yet if guests will be able to park hop when the parks reopen.

Magic Kingdom Sign

There are also special events tickets, like for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, that summer travelers need to consider (those parties start in August, after all!). At this time, purchased Halloween party tickets are still valid. There is no word yet on whether or not Disney will still hold these events, but if they choose to do so and you cancel your vacation, we cannot guarantee that Disney will refund your party tickets.

Dining Reservations & Disney Dining Plan

As we mentioned earlier, Disney recently announced that they will be automatically canceling all existing dining reservations as well as Disney Dining Plan packages.

Be Our Guest Ballroom

If you purchased a Disney Dining Plan, that will automatically be refunded regardless of whether or not you choose to cancel your vacation altogether.

Non-Disney Related Refunds

For most travelers, there are a couple of additional major expenses to deal with when canceling your vacation that have nothing to do with Disney themselves. This could be a more complex issue that will be unique to each traveler, but here’s what we know so far.

Airlines

Each airline operates differently, so what one airline does in terms of refunds may not be how another one works. In general, the airline industry is going to want your business, so you may see enticing deals, which could include:

  • Canceling or rebooking your flight with no fees
  • Automatically extending rewards status
  • Lowering the qualifications for elite status

Orlando International Airport

Not all airlines are going to be as open about discussing refunds as others, so keep asking (politely) when speaking with an agent!

Car Rentals

Similar to airlines, each rental car company will operate differently in terms of what they will refund. For example, Enterprise is currently offering a no-fee cancellation policy for existing prepaid rental reservations.

Contact the company you are renting through to see what they are doing differently during this time and what their cancellation policies are.

Magic Kingdom

Ultimately the decision on whether or not to cancel your summer reservation is entirely up to you. There’s no question that Disney World will look very different than what we’re accustomed to, but we’re sure that Disney is doing all that they can to create those magical experiences we have all come to expect.

With that in mind, know that once the parks reopen, Disney will probably be less lenient in terms of full refunds, so be prepared! Review those cancellation policies and make the best decision for your family!
