7 Super Weird Ways the NBA and Disney Are (Strangely) Linked Right Now

When you think of Disney, the first thing that pops into your head probably isn’t “basketball.”

NBA Experience

Still, Disney actually has a pretty close relationship with the NBA in more ways than one. You might have heard about the NBA Experience in Disney Springs or maybe you’ve watched basketball on Disney-owned ESPN, but those aren’t the ONLY ways these two companies are linked.

Come with us down the strange, winding rabbit hole of seven weird ways that Disney and the NBA are connected right NOW!

1. The NBA might use Disney World as a potential playing site if the 2019-2020 season resumes.

The big NBA/Disney news right now is that IF the NBA 2019-2020 season is able to resume, they’re considering using Disney World as a potential venue for (fan-less) games. They’ve even already gotten the “OK” from Disney!

Jostens Center at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex

The NBA has been looking at the logistics of sequestering the entire league. If play could resume at one centralized location, the league could create a “bubble” to keep the players safe.

ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex

If such a situation came to pass, it would be pretty unique to see Disney help get the NBA back up and running.

2. An NBA Player ended up in possession of some stolen vintage Disney World items.

There was a theft case over some missing vintage Disney items a few months ago. Interestingly enough, the stolen items ended up in the possession of mega-Disney fan and Milwaukee Bucks center Robin Lopez.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, authorities found some vintage Disney clothing that used to belong to the Buzzy animatronic from the old Cranium Command attraction in Epcot in Lopez’s possession. The player claimed he did not know that the items were stolen, but he had purchased them from a former Disney employee who had stolen them from Disney property.

The case has since been settled with the perpetrators taking a plea deal. The situation was pretty high profile, partially because of Lopez’s involvement and because the entire Buzzy animatronic that was stolen still remains missing! The perpetrators claim to have no knowledge of the missing animatronic.

3. Disney is taking a major financial loss due to the suspension of the NBA season.

Remember how we said that Disney owns ESPN? Well, they are taking a significant loss due to the fact that the NBA season has been suspended. According to The Motley Fool, the NBA’s media rights deal with ESPN is worth $2.6 billion per year. Right now, that worth is taking a hit with downgrades to stock and losses in ad revenue.

NBA Experience Store

Some analysts are suggesting that the loss could culminate in a multi-million dollar drop in income due to the NBA alone. It’s interesting to think about how the two businesses have such a dramatic effect on one another!

4. The NBA is looking to Bob Iger for guidance on reopening.

Even though the NBA is completely separate from Disney, the league is reportedly looking to Disney’s executive chairman Bob Iger for some business guidance.

Iger was invited to advise the Board of Governors of the NBA and he addressed how the Disney parks have been making decisions saying, “It’s about the data, and not the date.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver appears to agree with this sentiment noting, “We’re just not ready to set a date yet in terms of how long we could wait before we no longer would be able to continue this season.”

The two companies are both MASSIVE entertainment-based organizations that notably require people to come together for their business models to work.

5. The NBA Experience opened in Disney Springs in 2019.

Though temporarily closed right now, the NBA Experience opened up in Disney Springs last year. For several years, Disney Springs had a major indoor interactive attraction in the same space called DisneyQuest, but as technology advanced, the experience grew stagnant. So, ultimately, the plug was pulled on DisneyQuest and replaced by a new immersive experience — one that’s b-ball-centric.

NBA Experience

NBA Experience has been open for almost a year now and offers a unique sports experience. The two-story attraction features a bunch of immersive activities designed to make the guest (that’s you) feel like an NBA star. This attraction is a cool option for sports fans!

6. The NBA and Disney theme parks announced closures within one day of each other.

Like we mentioned, the Disney parks and the NBA are both in a state of temporary closure right now. What’s interesting is that they actually started their closures within one day of each other! The NBA suspended their season on March 11th and Disney announced the closure of many of their theme parks on March 12th.

Disneyland Main Entrance

Both companies noted a growing concern in the global health crisis and were some of the first large organizations to close or suspend operations to protect their employees and patrons.

7. The new Michael Jordan documentary is the most-watched ESPN documentary EVER.

And our last interesting link to note is related to the Michael Jordan documentary The Last Dance. This ESPN docuseries has been on the channel for a few weeks and, according to the Disney earnings call the other day, it’s the most-watched ESPN documentary EVER. Woah.

©ESPN

What’s crazy is that this is making ESPN (and therefore Disney) some serious money despite the fact that there aren’t a lot of sports going on. In fact, April brought a rise in primetime viewership per CEO Christine McCarthy.

So there you have it! It certainly shocked us how intertwined Disney and the NBA are with each other! We love finding interesting things like this to share with you guys and we’re interested to see what ends up happening with a few of these situations.

Were you surprised about the different ways that Disney and the NBA are linked? Tell us in the comments!

Disney’s head of streaming Kevin Mayer is now the CEO of TikTok

TikTok

The Walt Disney Company is seeing another shift in its corporate leadership. The company announced how their streaming executive, Kevin Mayer, is leaving Disney. Mr. Mayer is departing because he is assuming a new corporate role elsewhere as the CEO of ByteDance, which is the Chinese company that owns TikTok.

TikTok is an app used for creating short videos and the popularity of the social networking grew during the global pandemic. According to app data firm Sensor Tower, the TikTok app has been downloaded about 1.9 billion times worldwide. For the first quarter in 2020, the app was downloaded 307 million times, which is more downloads than any other app for the quarter.

When asked why he was leaving Disney, Kevin Mayer replied, “I was happy with my job at Disney. The magnitude of this opportunity was just something I couldn’t pass up.” Mr. Mayer says that music and gaming are two possible expansions he’d like to explore for the future of TikTok.

He did achieve phenomenal success with Disney’s streaming service. Back in April, The Walt Disney Company celebrated crossing 50 million subscribers on Disney+. Since the announcement, the Walt Disney Company has named Rebecca Campbell as the new corporate leader of the Disney+ streaming service.

Partners in Health is a social justice organization driven by the uncompromising belief that everyone, especially those most in need, deserves the right to health care, according to the PIH website.

“Partners In Health treats patients and trains the next generation of local health care workers in some of the most remote and marginalized communities around the world. We then use what we’ve learned at the grassroots level to influence global health policy so that our model of innovative care can be replicated all around the world. We partner with local governments and make open-ended commitments to countries to help them build strong public health systems. We don’t accept “no” for an answer, and know—emotionally and empirically—that the world’s injustices have cures.”

According to THR, Taika Waititi will host the 10-episode series of James and the Giant Peach With Taika and Friends, which will be posted Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on the Roald Dahl YouTube channel and will feature: Meryl Streep, Chris Hemsworth, Liam Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett, Ryan Reynolds, Mindy Kaling, Benedict Cumberbatch, Lupita Nyong’o, Billy Porter and Sarah Paulson, who will all read and perform the characters from the story from within their homes.

“Being an adult child myself and having read James and the Giant Peach to my girls multiple times, I’m excited to be able to partner with my friends, the Dahl team and Partners in Health and retell this story to help those most in need right now,” said Waititi. “This wacky, wonderful tale is about resilience in children, triumph over adversity and dealing with a sense of isolation, which couldn’t been more relevant today.”

Managing director of the Roald Dahl Story Company, Luke Kelly shared, “We are so delighted to be able to support this retelling of James and the Giant Peach and not only bring a moment of joy and escapism to children and families at this very tough time — but also to raise vital funds for Partners in Health. We’re incredibly grateful and excited to have Taika and so many incredible stars taking part. We can’t wait for people to see what we’ve got in store — it’s going to be absolutely GIGANTIC fun.”

Original Creator Wants to Make a ‘Gargoyles’ Live-Action Film with Jordan Peele

Original Creator Wants to Make a ‘Gargoyles‘ Live-Action Film with Jordan Peele. Not too long ago, Get Out director and Toy Story 4 star, Jordan Peele, pitched the idea of a live-action film adaption of the 90’s cult classic animated series, Gargoyles.

According to the original series creator, Greg Weisman, Disney listened to Peele’s pitch, but never responded with a formal decision. Weisman also expressed heavy interest in working with Jordan should Disney decide to move forward with rebooting the franchise in any capacity.

“I think it’s accurate that he was interested, but I can’t speak to how far those conversations went,” the writer shared, “My understanding — not inside information, just my understanding — is that he expressed an interest in the property. And Disney didn’t say no. But by not saying yes, that answers the question. You know, they didn’t want to say no to Jordan Peele, but they also didn’t want to say yes to Gargoyles. So it just didn’t go anywhere.”

“I’d like to think — I don’t know this, I want to make that clear — that he’d still be interested in doing something with it if a new opportunity arose. I can’t say for sure if that’s true, I have no idea. But I would hope so. I’m a huge fan of his,” Weisman added. “Should he read this article, I would love to work with him. But I don’t know how realistic that is.”

If it wasn’t enough that a production team is ready and willing to create a reboot of the pop cult franchise even the series lead voice actor, Keith David (Goliath), would love to reprise his role should Disney decide to take the pitch from Peele and Weisman.

“[We’ve wondered] why we haven’t come back to a reboot,” Keith shared with ComicBook. “I mean, I would love nothing more than to revisit Goliath. You know, he was absolutely one of my very, very, very, very favorite characters. I’ve always maintained that when I grow up, I want to be like Goliath.”

Not familiar with the animated series? You can read the synopsis below:

“A clan of heroic night creatures pledge to protect modern New York City as they did in Scotland one thousand years earlier. In the Dark Ages, there was a race of heroic warrior monsters known as Gargoyles. These creatures existed as stone during the day, but become flesh and blood at night.”

Gargoyles is currently available to stream via Disney+.

Would you like to see a live-action Gargoyles film? Or would you prefer a rebooted animated series? What is your favorite memory of the original animated series? We would love to hear your thoughts and stories in the comments.

Rumored: Ahsoka Tano Getting Her Own Star Wars Series on Disney+

Rumored: Ahsoka Tano Getting Her Own Star Wars Series on Disney+. Since the news spread of Ahsoka Tano’s appearance in The Mandalorian Season 2 fans have been buzzing to learn more about her role within the series.

Though Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to confirm any new casting choices for The Mandalorian, sources close to production have confirmed Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze, and Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett/Captain Rex, the character Sabine Wren from Star Wars: Rebels is also expected to appear in the series. The latest rumor has added Timothy Olyphant (Santa Clarita Diet) to the mix in a mysterious role for the series.

We are still on pins and needles for confirmation about the characters appearances in the mega popular Star Wars series, but it has led others to start questioning: “Is Ahsoka getting her own series on Disney+?”

Without official confirmation of the characters appearance in the new series it is a bit early to predict the path of Ahsoka, but with how Star Wars: Rebels ended there is more than enough content to be explored! It is also unclear if the rumor means we will get a live-action series or possibly another animated series following the Grey Jedi. We would LOVE for this rumor to be true and only time will tell if it holds any merit.

The Mandalorian Season 2 finished filming back in February 2020 and is currently being edited at home thanks to the dedicated VFX artists and editors at Lucasfilm. Disney also recently ordered a third season of the mega-popular Star Wars series, which will likely premiere on Disney+ in October 2021, similarly to how the first two seasons were released via the new streaming service.

Would you like to see an Ahsoka led series? What new characters are you excited to see in Season 2 of The Mandalorian? What adventures do you think are in store for season 2? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
