Universal Studios Hollywood Asks County of L.A to Allow Theme Parks to Reopen

universal hollywood

The Universal Studios Hollywood president asked the L.A. County Board of Supervisors to allow theme park workers to return to work immediately in order to prepare for a reopening. Theme parks in the L.A. County would like to reopen between mid-June and July 1.

Karen Irwin, Universal Hollywood’s president, argues that theme parks don’t need to be among the last facilities to reopen since park visitors spend most of their time outdoors.

“Theme parks actually offer a more controlled environment than beaches, gardens or hiking trails,” said Irwin. She also said that the industry is developing protective measures that will allow for physical distancing, and noted that parks have the ability to limit capacity and manage guest flow.

“We would like approval to begin the reopening process immediately in order to get our employees back to work,” she said. “L.A. County parks will be ready to begin reopening between mid-June and July 1.” Irwin also noted that Las Vegas is reopening its casinos, and argued that L.A. County residents should have local options.

Universal is the first California theme park to request/suggest a reopening time. Universal Orlando will be reopening Friday with new health and safety measures in place.

Here’s hoping we will see some of our favorite Californian theme parks start to reopen soon!

Universal Studios Hollywood hopeful to reopen in July

universal hollywood

According to one union for Universal Studios Hollywood, the theme park is “hopeful” the entire resort will be reopened in July. There’s also a possibility of Universal Studios Hollywood’s CityWalk reopening this month.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees sent a note to its members saying that Universal may reopen CityWalk “on a limited basis” as soon as June 8.

The county recently approved in-person dining which clears the way for CityWalk to reopen. Guidelines for reopening theme parks have not yet been released so reopening the Universal park is more complicated.

Universal Orlando Resort reopens later this week with strict new health and safety measures in place. The Californian theme park may reopen with similar measures and protocols.

Californian theme parks can now reopen under stage 3 of the state’s reopening plans, though none have submitted reopening proposals as of yet. Stay tuned for more information as it gets released!

Disneyland can Reopen Under Phase 3 Guidelines as Early as June

disneyland

According to California officials and The Orange County Register, Disneyland and other theme parks can now reopen in Phase 3 of the state’s reopening plan.

“Theme parks are slated to open in Stage 3 if the rate of spread of COVID-19 and hospitalizations remain stable,” according to California Health and Human Services Agency spokesperson Kate Folmar.

California Governor Newsom says Phase 3 could begin in June.

“Phase 3 is not a year away. It’s not six months away. It’s not even three months away. It may not even be more than a month away,” Newsom said during a daily press briefing in mid-May. “We just want to make sure we have a protocol in place to secure customer safety, employee safety and allow the businesses to thrive in a way that is sustainable.”

Disneyland and other California theme parks are among the “higher risk” businesses and gatherings that would reopen in Stage 3 with adaptations and limits on the size of gatherings.

The state will work with theme parks on developing COVID-19 health and safety reopening plans.

There is no set date for when Phase 3 will begin and no California theme parks have submitted reopening plans yet.

News! California Counties Can Now Decide When To Reopen In-Store Retail

Just days ago, California’s Orange County met the required criteria and was cleared to transition into a “full stage two” of California’s reopening plan.

World of Disney in Disneyland Resort

This new phase permitted “limited services” including retail with curbside pickup and outdoor museums. But now, counties are able to make their own decisions regarding reopening in-store retail.

Today, the California Department of Public Health announced that counties’ public health departments are now permitted to decide when retail stores can reopen for business.

Although some counties have already transitioned into in-store retail, the announcement applies to the remaining counties. If a county’s public health department approves reopening, stores must follow California’s protocols for retailers. You can read the guide here, which includes temperature checks for employees, frequent sanitation, and social distancing between employees and customers.

The director of the California Department of Public Health stated, “Together, our actions have helped bend the curve and reduce infections in our state. As sectors continue to open with changes that aim to lower risk, remember that COVID-19 is still present in our communities…keeping physical distance, wearing face coverings in public, and washing your hands frequently are more important than ever to help protect yourself and those around you.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Governor Newsom previously announced California would also release an update on the state’s film and TV production guidelines soon. We will keep you updated with more information.
