Disney World suing Orange County over property taxes

Disney World suing Orange County over property taxes Orange County

Taxes! Taxes! Beautiful, lovely taxes!

Those who watched Disney’s animated Robin Hood movie might remember this particular Prince John quote. Unfortunately, taxes are something Disney is not excited about these days. The Walt Disney Company is suing Orange County’s Property Appraiser, Rick Singh, over their Walt Disney World property taxes. Disney argues that their 2019 property tax appraisals are too high.

In the past week, Disney filed a dozen lawsuits in the Orange Circuit Court over the property tax assessments for their theme parks, resorts, employee buildings and other structures on its sprawling property. However, Beth Watson, spokeswoman for Rick Singh’s office, disagrees with Disney’s complaints. Her office believes that Walt Disney World Resort was previously undervalued for decades by property appraisers.

“Again this year, the Disney organization has chosen use the court system to dispute the value of its property in Orange County and thereby pay reduced property taxes that would benefit area infrastructure and public schools,” Watson said. “The Orange County Property Appraiser looks forward to defending these values in court on behalf of the citizens of Orange County, so that Disney’s responsibility to the community is upheld.”

According to the Orange County appraisers, the assessed value for the four theme parks includes:

  • Magic Kingdom – $504 million
  • Epcot – $539 million
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios – $394 million
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom – $435 million

Even though Disney argues that the assessed property values are excessive, the company hasn’t stated what they believe the true values should be for the Orlando area theme parks. It’ll take time before any determination is made regarding the disputed property taxes and assessed values.

Lionel Richie and Disney Collaborating on an ‘All Night Long’ Musical

Lionel Richie and Disney Collaborating on an ‘All Night Long’ Musical

Lionel Richie and Disney Collaborating on an ‘All Night Long’ Musical. Award winning performer and American Idol judge Lionel Richie is teaming up with Disney to create a musical using his most iconic music from his impressive career.

The working title for the project is called All Night Long after Richie’s most notable song from 1983 that plays on radio and streaming stations around the world to this day. Pete Chiarelli (Crazy Rich Asians) is reportedly penning the script for All Night Long.

Current plans aim for a theatrical release of the musical and the studio has claimed it will not be a biopic, but a musical incorporating Lionel Richie’s music to a new story. A full list of songs for the musical has not been released and it is unknown if the song will be rerecorded for the film and performed by the actors within the production or if Lionel Richie will contribute to the piece with potential new recordings.

Are you excited to see a new musical in development? What famed song from Lionel Richie do you hope to see incorporated into the project? We would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions in the comments. Be sure to check back here at Chip and Co. for all things Disney!

California Says Film Studios Can Resume Filming as of June 12th With Some Conditions

California Says Film Studios Can Resume Filming as of June 12th With Some Conditions

California Says Film Studios Can Resume Filming as of June 12th With Some Conditions. At the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic, filming for television and film ended on a moments notice and has just begun getting the all clear to resume around the world.

This week, the California Department of Public Health made a formal announcement stating: “Music, TV and film production may resume in California, recommended no sooner than June 12, 2020, and subject to approval by county public health officers within the jurisdictions of operations,” the department shared. “To reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission, productions, cast, crew and other industry workers should abide by safety protocols agreed by labor and management, which may be further enhanced by county public health officers.”

According to the report from LA Times, “On Monday, a task force of studios and union officials submitted a 22-page white paper to governors in California and New York; its proposed health and safety guidelines aim to protect workers and performers as production resumes. The paper calls for dramatic changes to what had previously been routine practices in the film and TV industry, which was booming before the pandemic because of the demand for content by multiple streaming services. The shutdown drew focus to long-standing problems with hygiene and sanitation on film sets, including a lack of hand-washing stations.”

It should be noted, some of our favorite upcoming titles are currently or scheduled to be filmed in various locations around the U.S. and the world, so this would only affect titles currently scheduled to film in the State of California. No formal announcement has been made for nationwide filming to resume. We do know that films such as the Avatar Sequels have resumed filming in New Zealand and Prague recently re-opened to international filming and will be one of the filming locations for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier coming to Disney+.

Disney and Beyoncé In Talks Over $100 Million Deal for Collaboration on 3 New Films

Disney and Beyoncé In Talks Over $100 Million Deal for Collaboration on 3 New Films

Disney and Beyoncé In Talks Over $100 Million Deal for Collaboration on 3 New Films. After the wild success of The Lion King (2019) it seems Disney and Beyoncé are in negotiations to collaborate on 3 new films together, including some work on the Black Panther 2 soundtrack.

An inside source spoke with U.K.’s The Sun and claims, “Beyonce’s deal with Disney for The Lion King was one of the biggest it has done to date. Now they want to expand it by giving her free reign to create her own movies under the Disney umbrella.”  The insider added: ‘The conversations are ongoing but it’s an exciting proposition.”

Another source shared with The Sun, “Beyoncé has become a major player for Disney and is the perfect fit for their brand. She’s worked on a number of projects for them, including voicing Nala in the reboot of The Lion King, and now they’re keen to secure her for more projects. Disney have put forward a deal worth around [$100 Million], which will secure Beyoncé for three major projects, including the Black Panther sequel. As part of the deal they are also trying to get her team to agree to have Beyoncé voicing some of the new documentaries coming to Disney Plus. After the success of having Meghan Markle voicing the film Elephant on the platform, they have projects coming up which align perfectly with Beyoncé’s brand. The negotiations are still ongoing but it’s the final details that are being thrashed out now.”

In the past, Disney had offered an audition to Beyoncé for the role of Tiana in Disney’s Princess and the Frog, but reports stated that the award winning singer/songwriter/director believed Disney would offer her the part without a formal audition. When she did not show, Disney continued with casting for the film and offered the role to Anika Noni Rose. It seems both the studio and Beyoncé agree with the mantra “Hakuna Matata” and have no worries about partnering together going forward.

With the combined knowledge and talent of both the studio and the multifaceted entertainer there is no doubting Disney and Beyoncé will make a great pair and could create some truly amazing work together.
