Today, in a press conference, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings provided updates on the reopening of businesses and theme parks.

Mayor Demings began the conference by addressing the fact that hurricane season begins this Monday, June 1st. He acknowledged that this could cause further complexities to other health and reopening initiatives in the future.

Demings also noted that both SeaWorld and Disney World submitted reopening proposals yesterday. He has submitted letters of endorsement for both and is awaiting a response from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Mayor Demings said that in the last hour, he has heard that 12 smaller theme park reopening plans had been approved, and he suspects Governor DeSantis will get back to him “soon” regarding the larger theme parks.

Mayor Demings also addressed a question about how they will balance safety with the need for business in an economy dependent on tourism. He said that tourist attractions will reopen with reduced capacity and increased sanitation measures, and noted that the theme parks will “look drastically different.”

He also said that multiple organizations could be involved in maintaining compliance, including the Department of Health, Department of Business Regulations, local law enforcement, and more.

Disney World

Just moments ago Disney World submitted their reopening plan to the Orange County Task Force.

These plans included an opening date of the Magic Kingdom & Animal Kingdom on July 11th & Hollywood Studios and Epcot for July 15th.

Soft openings will occur before those opening dates with cast members and invited guests.

Jim McPhee, Senior Vice President of Operations says that theme park reservations will be required in advance of visiting the Disney World theme parks.

The Orange County Task Force is expected to vote on whether to submit the plans for approval to Mayor Demings.

NEWS! Universal Orlando’s Reopening Plan Approved By Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings

Earlier today, Universal Orlando Resort presented its reopening plans during a meeting of the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force.

Universal

Universal Studios has been closed since mid-March due to the global health situation. However, the resort took its first step towards resuming operations with the phased reopening of CityWalk, which began on May 14th. Earlier today, Universal submitted plans for the parks which included a reopening date of June 5, 2020 for the general public with additional safety measures in place.

The first step of approval for Universal’s plan came from the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force. The task force approved the proposal earlier today, and it was then sent to Orange County Mayor Jerry Demmings. Demings has now said that he will sign off on the proposal and submit a recommendation to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in support of Universal’s plan tomorrow morning.

Universal Orlando

Mayor Demings noted that the main focus upon reopening will be to ensure that theme parks continue to follow the CDC health and safety guidelines. This includes the appropriate screening of guests and employees, proper sanitation, and continued social distancing.

CityWalk

Universal has proposed a phased reopening beginning with team members on June 1st, potentially followed by Annual Passholders, with an opening for the general public on June 5th.

News: Walt Disney World Will Propose Reopening Date and Plan Tomorrow

As of now, Orlando area theme parks such as Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and SeaWorld Orlando have not announced reopening dates.

Florida Palms

Universal Orlando’s CityWalk and Disney Springs have reopened certain retail and dining locations to guests and SeaWorld is performing test runs of their coasters with masked riders — but none of these companies have shared a timeline for reopening their theme parks.

Florida stepped into “full Phase One” of the state’s reopening plan this past Monday allowing restaurants, retail, museums, and libraries to increase capacity to 50%. In this phase, amusement parks are not cleared to open, but Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, requested for theme parks to submit plans for reopening after they have been endorsed by local officials.

Orlando

This process begins tomorrow, May 21st, as the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force plans to meet and listen to the theme parks’ presentations on how and when they plan to reopen.

Florida

The Mayor of Orange County, Jerry Demings, is required to sign off on these plans before they will be presented to Governor DeSantis. We will keep you updated as we learn more!
