PHOTOS: What It’s Like To Eat in a Reopened Disney World Right Now

We’re reporting to you live from Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort today for this first time since mid-March.

That’s because while the rest of Disney World’s theme parks and hotels will remain closed until further notice, some third-party restaurants and retailers have started reopening today.

We’ve been busy sharing with you our own guest experiences such as parking at Disney Springs, having our temperatures taken, and seeing what some of the recently reopened retail stores have been like inside. Now want to share with you what it’s like to dine at Disney Springs right now. Do note that each location is doing things a little differently!

As a reminder, masks can be removed when sitting and dining at a table service restaurant in Disney Springs.

The Boathouse

At 11AM, The Boathouse reopened today. We made our reservation over the phone and were given the option to dine inside or outside. Tables were noticeably spaced apart in the main dining room.

The restaurant is also taking walk-up reservations for patio seating and their indoor dining room is limited to 25% capacity. We spotted this sign stating face masks must be worn at all times unless seated at a table.

We sat outdoors where the guest tables had also been spaced apart more than usual. The Boathouse has been using paper menus for some time, but are no longer passing them between guests — our sever even suggested we keep ours as a free souvenir!

The servers at The Boathouse were all wearing masks and gloves. Cutlery was rolled in a cloth napkin while drinks were served in normal glassware with paper straws. We ordered the Jumbo Lump Cake with a side of Truffle Fries.

And the Duck, Duck Razz, of course! Good to note: the bars are not open at The Boathouse yet, but they will make you a drink to go.

We DO love this martini. Can you blame us? Look at that little guy!

Servers were cleaning their own tables in between guests. We asked our server what her experience has been like. She said the restaurant staff was given the choice if they wanted to come back right away, and she was ready to go and is excited to be back. Training packets were sent out a week ago and yesterday team members were brought in for training.

Everyone is being asked to change out their gloves in between tables while cooks in the kitchen have a timer that goes off every 15 minutes reminding them to stop, wash hands, and change gloves.

Frontera Cocina also opened at 11AM today while the staff came in earlier this week for safety training. The restaurant is doing food-to-go and currently accepting reservations. We booked our table in advance on OpenTable and once we arrived, we noticed a new hand sanitizing station for guests and employees at the front of the restaurant.

Frontera Cocina is using both disposable paper menus and digital menus. There’s a QR code at each table that you can scan to view the menu on your smartphone or you may view a paper menu instead. Our server told us paper menus are being thrown out after each use.

Beverages were being served in normal glassware with single-use agave straws. Unlike The Boathouse’s servers, the food runners at Frontera Cocina weren’t wearing gloves.

We ordered the Flautas and the Play with Fire Margarita. Our food was delicious as it always is at Frontera Cocina.

Frontera Cocina is also operating a to-go window where you can pick up eats or sips without the full sit-down experience.

Things were a little different at Frontera Cocina, but the staff was still friendly and the fare was still delicious.

Over at Wine Bar George we saw similar distancing efforts such as markings on the ground to guide the queue for entry.

They also have a To-Go Booth with the full food and beverage menu available for purchase.

As we were seated we noticed some significant health measures. The restaurant is using digital menus that you access via a QR code. You are also delivered a paper bag to hold your mask and two packaged wipes to clean your hands when you sit down. Standard glassware is used.

George Miliotes was here today! You know him as the “George” part of Wine Bar George. He came and talked to us, telling about how hard it was for him not to be able to smile at customers. Such a nice guy!

We ordered the Burrata and the Saganaki (read: cheese on fire) and they both delighted. We do love us some Wine Bar George.

The servers were wonderful, as always, and took care to follow health measures. We noticed that our server was changing gloves often and he told us that they had undergone a good amount of training.

We had a nice time at Wine Bar George and they have put some thought into following the new health guidelines.

Our trip to Wolfgang Puck showed us some changes too. We had a reservation, but there was almost an hour-long wait for walk-in guests. We think this is partly due to demand and partly due to the fact that there are fewer, spaced out tables to allow customers to distance.

The restaurant has shifted its menu a bit. Instead of changing menus between lunch and dinner, they have one all-day menu that is slightly reduced. Since the menu is more similar to their dinner menu, they have opted to include more lunch options at the Grab and Go Window outside.

Some more of their health measures include heightened cleaning, sanitizer available at all bus stations, the sanitization of pens between uses, handwashing required anytime a team member enters the kitchen, and the use of gloves.

We opted to try the Bruschetta this time since our server said it was the most popular appetizer, and it did NOT disappoint. Think Caprese salad piled on fresh bread. Yeah, it’s good.

At the To-Go Window, we tried the new Reese’s Cookie, the Banana Pudding Gelato, and the Kakamora Cocktail. Honestly, we’re not sure there is a more perfect dessert.

We’ll be keeping an eye on Wolfgang Puck and the other dining locations to see how health measures develop over the next few days and weeks.

Starbucks

We stopped by Starbucks early this morning and discovered they have a new specialty drink called “Welcome Back!”

It’s a cold drink made from mango, dragonfruit refresher, coconut milk, strawberries, blackberries, and pineapple ginger syrup topped with golden ginger whipped cream! 

Instead of guests congregating around the order pick-up window, a friendly Starbucks employee retrieves your order and places it on a table for you to grab while you wait at a safe distance.

Guests were also encouraged to socially distance themselves while waiting in line with some floor decals indicating where guests should stand.

And while Starbucks was selling Reusable Cups today, they aren’t permitting guests to use them at this time. As for payment, they’re still accepting all forms, but we recommend downloading the Starbucks app as a touchless payment option!

We also swung by Joffrey’s Coffee and Tea Company to see how they’re adapting.

There were social distancing markers on the ground to keep guests six feet apart from one another. At Joffrey’s, they fittingly use coffee bean stickers to denote where to stand. There were also designated entrances and exits to keep the flow of traffic moving a certain way.

We were able to confirm that you can walk around Springs with your coffee, you cannot, however, stay and drink your coffee inside of Joffrey’s. They ask that you remove your mask to take a sip or bite, and replace it between sips or bites.

Joffrey’s is still serving a full menu of coffee and donuts when you need a pick-me-up.

You know we love The Polite Pig, so of course, we had to stop by and see how they’re contending with new health measures. Plus, they have a new item on the menu! Like pretty much everywhere, there are stickers on the floor telling guests where to stand.

We also noticed that they had a heightened cleaning protocol. An employee was out wiping down the divider chains while we were there. The interesting touch here was that employees are wearing branded masks!

When ordering, you can opt to use a digital menu through a QR code or you can use a paper menu to be disposed of after use.

A big thing here is that the sauce bar is out of commission. You can still get sauces, but the employees will bring them to you.

We ordered the pork rinds (because they’re NEW) and a gloved employee brought them over to us. Pork rinds and sauce? We’re not sure we’ve had that before but we’re not complaining. They were tasty!

Reopening Day of Disney Springs From Cast Members’ Perspectives

We’re here live for the official reopening of third party locations at Disney Springs.

Many health and safety measures have been put into place, most of which are very new for Disney Springs employees and Cast Members. So, we thought we’d chat to a few Springs employees to see how their experiences have been on the first day of reopening.

Of course, we’re checking in on all the dining locations in Disney Springs and we were curious to hear what the employees had to say about the reopenings.

We grabbed a quick meal at Frontera Cocina today to see how they’re contending with new health protocols. Our server seemed to be in a really good mood. She told us that we should keep our one-use disposable menu as a historical souvenir. Ha! Maybe we will.

Apparently, the staff came back a little bit early for new safety and health training. Even with the added health measures, the staff says they still want time at Frontera Cocina to feel like a fiesta!

The BOATHOUSE

Our experience at The BOATHOUSE brought us some tasty eats and showed us a lot about what the new health measures look like for this waterside restaurant. According to our server, training packets were sent out a week ago to staff and reopeners were brought in yesterday for some training.

Our server also spoke pretty highly of the cleanliness at The BOATHOUSE. She said that, though she has worked in several restaurants, this one is the cleanest restaurant that she’s seen — even before the crisis.

Some behind-the-scenes measures at this location include that runners are changing gloves between tables, and cooks and chefs are on a 15-minute timer where they have to stop what they’re doing to wash their hands and change their gloves.

At The BOATHOUSE, staff members were given the option of whether they wanted to come back immediately or not. In the case of our server, she was ready to go and is excited to be back at work.

We absolutely love Wine Bar George so we were happy to sit down at this dining location. The staff was delightful, as usual. Our seater let us know that he was having a hard time not pulling our chairs out for us since they aren’t supposed to touch the chairs when guests are there.

Master Sommelier George Miliotes was actually in attendance. Yes, he is the “George” in Wine Bar George. George told us that he is very happy to be back, but it feels weird that he can’t smile at guests with his mask on. Don’t worry, he assured us that he WAS smiling when he talked to us.

Our server let us know that staff was reduced at the start of the closure, so the staff that was kept is made up of some of the strongest employees. The team received lots of training and they feel comfortable and safe.

Over at Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill, the new measures were similar. Our server explained that the team was called in on Monday for safety training and came in earlier today to rearrange tables for distancing.

Some behind-the-scenes measures here include hand sanitizer at every bussing station, pen sanitizing between use, and mandatory handwashing for all team members when they enter the kitchen.

Guest Relations Cast Members

We also spoke to some Guest Relations Cast Members about how Disney has been handling the reopening. Though the whole Guest Relations team is not called back just yet, a few of them are and they’re doing things a little differently.

Returning Guest Relations Cast had a 3-day training program that included courses on personal protective equipment (PPE), safety precautions, and how to seem friendly when communicating in a mask (AKA, just using your eyes and hands!).

As of now, the Welcome Center is open with limited capabilities but guests can not wait inside. Fuel Rods are available but since they are a high-touch item, the kiosk has to be wiped down frequently and after each use.

Merchandise Cast Members and Employees

We talked to some employees in merchandise locations for insight too! Folks at The BOATHOUSE Store told us that they are not selling face masks for now. Apparently, it was considered, but they didn’t want to be stuck with the inventory if masks stop being mandatory.

Over at Ron Jon Surf Shop, the General Manager was happy to relay some insight into their measures. The management team came in a week prior to opening to clean the store and set up for a return to business. Since then, they are instituting weekly calls with the team, supplying masks for team members that do not have one, and bringing employees in for new training.

Disney World is the Reported Frontrunner to Host the Rest of the NBA Season

In the past couple of weeks, we have seen several industries gradually resume business operations with a focus on health and safety.

When it comes to professional sports, Disney World may play a key role in hosting the rest of the 2019-2020 NBA season.

Sports Illustrated reported that — out of the several sites the NBA is considering — Disney World is the current frontrunner. We had previously reported on why Disney World could be a good fit for the NBA, and Disney Executive Chairman, Bob Iger, even weighed in on the NBA’s Board of Governors discussion in April.  But now that the NBA is more seriously considering resuming the season — Disney World is still on the table as a viable option.

Cast Members at NBA Store Ready to Shoot Some Hoops

Disney World has the “campus-like” environment the League Commissioner, Adam Silver, states they are looking for. Players and staff could be housed in the resort hotels and players would have a reduced chance of contracting any illness on a more private property like Disney. And, of course, with the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex’s 12 courts and the capacity to broadcast the games, it could be a perfect fit.

Las Vegas is another city being strongly considered, but no decisions have been made at this time. Regardless of whichever site the NBA chooses, fans will not be allowed to attend games.With some teams resuming training as early as next week, we may start to see more developments soon, so we will keep you updated with the latest!

Orlando theme parks will start making re-opening presentations to the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force tomorrow

Orlando Theme ParksNews is being shared online that major theme parks, Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and SeaWorld Orlando, will start making re-opening presentations to the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force tomorrow. With these presentations, they MUST provide a re-opening date.

Mayor Jerry Demings has to sign off on the plans before they can be submitted to Governor Ron DeSantis.

That information was shared by Lauren Seabrook of WFTV.

Hopefully, we will have an opening date for the Orlando Theme Parks very soon!

Disney World Foods That Are SO GOOD They’ve Been Around Since Opening Day (And Where to Get ‘Em)

We here at DFB talk a lot about what the BEST food items are in Disney World.

We have lots of favorites — some are classic and some are brand-new — but there are some Disney foods that are undeniably good. How? They’ve stood the test of time!

We’re taking a look at some of the dishes in Disney that have been around since OPENING DAY of their park or restaurant. You KNOW how often menus change in Disney, so that’s quite a feat!

Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli at California Grill

First up, we’re taking a look at a classic dish from California Grill, the signature restaurant on the top floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. California Grill is always an experience thanks to the sweeping views of the Magic Kingdom and nearby resorts, and, if you’re there at the right time, the perfect view of the Happily Ever After fireworks show in Magic Kingdom.

Like most of the signature restaurants in Disney World, California Grill has a rotating menu that changes based on market-inspired and seasonal ingredients and decisions from the chef. It’s also gone through several different executive chefs since 1995, so you can imagine that not many original menu items have stuck around.

That is, except for the Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli. This appetizer was introduced on the first California Grill menu when the restaurant replaced Top of the World in 1995. It’s seen very minor adjustments over the years, but it’s still a single, large ravioli stuffed with goat cheese in a tomato broth topped with crispy mushrooms.

The ravioli was a hit then and it remains a hit today. In fact, we consider it one of the best things we’ve ever eaten in Disney World!

Cruising on over to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we’re headed to a classic Disney World dining location — The Hollywood Brown Derby. This location is a replica of the famous Brown Derby restaurant in the real Hollywood, and it features the iconic Cobb Salad to boot!

For those who don’t know, the Cobb Salad was supposedly invented by (original) Brown Derby owner Robert Howard Cobb (there are actually a few versions of the story of the origination of the Cobb Salad!). In nearly all cases, the salad is comprised of finely chopped Greens, Turkey Breast, Bacon, Egg, Tomatoes, Crumbled Blue Cheese, Avocado, Chives, and Cobb Dressing (similar to French dressing).

The dish has been a staple of the restaurant in Tinseltown just like it has been at the Disney World iteration. To truly represent the original restaurant, The Hollywood Brown Derby opened with Disney MGM Studios in 1989 with a Cobb Salad on the menu.

And it’s still there to this day! Seriously, you gotta try this Cobb at least once. There’s a reason it’s lasted so long!

The Cobb Salad isn’t the ONLY dish at The Hollywood Brown Derby that’s stood the test of time. Once you’re done feasting on your greens, you can wrap up your meal with the DELICIOUS Grapefruit Cake. Ever wondered how this treat came to be?

Rumor has it that famed Hollywood gossip columnist Louella Parsons told the REAL Brown Derby’s owner, Robert Howard Cobb, that all of his desserts were way too fattening and he should offer something healthier.

Cobb’s response was to tell his chef to make a dessert that had grapefruit in it because, at the time, a grapefruit was popular around Hollywood for its “slimming abilities.”  The grapefruit cake — with all it’s NOT so slimming cream cheese frosting — was born!

Like the Cobb Salad, the Grapefruit Cake debuted on the menu when MGM Studios opened in 1989 and it remains the most popular dessert to this day. If you can’t get to Hollywood Studios soon, we recommend making one for yourself at home. This cake is THAT good.

Citrus Swirl at Sunshine Tree Terrace

You might think that the arguably MORE famous Dole Whip is the treat that’s been around from Disney World’s Magic Kingdom’s opening day, but it’s actually a different frozen and fruity delight! We’re talking ’bout that Citrus Swirl at Sunshine Tree Terrace!

So, why was the Citrus Swirl around on the opening day of Magic Kingdom? Well, it all comes back to some of the sponsorships of Adventureland at the time!

Sunshine Tree Terrace (and The Enchanted Tiki Room [then called the Tropical Serenade], FYI) were both sponsored by the Florida Citrus Commission back in the ’70s. Disney ended up using OJ from Florida orange growers in the Orange Swirl and even created a mascot to go with the sponsored locations — the Orange Bird!

Now this special treat is a little bit different because it HAS disappeared from the menu a few times (once for a LONG time only to reappear in 2012!).

Recently, Disney even tried to replace it with the VERY different Orange Swirl made with Orange Dole Whip, only to bring back the original. The OG Citrus Swirl is a combo of frozen orange juice and vanilla soft serve.

It’s a really unique treat with the tangy real orange juice that we think every Disney World fan should try at least once! Now, you can get Orange Swirl OR the OG Citrus Swirl at Sunshine Tree Terrace (plus a bunch of other Dole Whip flavors!). So, despite some hiccups, Citrus Swirl has been delighting guests since Magic Kingdom opened in 1971.

Next up, we’re checking out a drink that’s been in Disney’s Animal Kingdom since it opened in 1998. The Safari Amber Beer was developed by Anheuser-Busch for the new theme park and it’s still available in restaurants around the park to this day!

Recently, we’ve spotted it at Pizzafari, Flame Tree Barbecue, Harambe Market, Restaurantosaurus, The Smiling Crocodile, Tamu Tamu Refreshments, Yak & Yeti Quality Beverages, Yak & Yeti Restaurant and the Dawa Bar — it seems like it’s everywhere! You can also spot the Safari Amber at Epcot’s Refreshment Outpost and occasionally at dining locations around Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

If you’re a beer lover, you gotta try the Safari Amber at least once. After all, it’s EXCLUSIVELY available in Disney World!

Fish and Chips at Rose & Crown Dining Room

We’re wrapping up our tour of iconic opening day foods with a visit to the United Kingdom Pavilion in Epcot! This was one of the original nine World Showcase pavilions that opened with Epcot in 1982 and Rose & Crown Pub and Dining Room has been around since the beginning!

Of course, the most iconic item on the menu at Rose & Crown is the Fish and Chips — and they’re tasty too! The fish always has the CRUNCHIEST batter and the chips (fries, FYI!) are usually perfectly cooked — crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This meal is super representative of UK culture and eats and we’re so glad it’s stuck around.

Pro tip: If you’re looking to snag your Fish & Chips QUICK, you can buy a similar meal from Yorkshire County Fish Shop just next door to the Rose & Crown.

YES these Disney eats should be on your bucket list. After all, they’re practically historic! Any dishes and drinks that can stand the test of time quite like these goodies must have something pretty magical going for them!
